Over 14000 police to be deployed for Christmas


The Ghana Police Service says it will deploy over 14,000 personnel for the 2017 Christmas duties nationwide. Additionally, 1,200 personnel from various units at the national headquarters are to engage in special operations during the period. Director General of Police Operations, COP Dr George Akufo Dampare who announced this called on the general public to assist the police maintain peace and security. Christmas is usually characterised by both human and vehicular traffic as a result of heavy movement of persons. According to the police, criminal elements also take advantage of the situation to perpetrate their nefarious acts. The police is therefore increasing the presence of its personnel during the period in a bid to reduce risks. These personnel would be deployed for traffic management, highway patrols, commercial and entertainment centres, residential areas, and vital installations among others. “Our objective is to ensure that there is maximum law enforcement and traffic management to ensure that people mark the festivities without hindrance,” COP Akufo Dampare said. The police operation would also be targeting criminal dens and land guards, he added, “we will police the environment in a way they would have no place to hide”. Meanwhile, Director General of Police Patrol Department, COP Yaagy Akuriba, has urged personnel that would be deployed to ensure professionalism at all times.
